Tonight I had the pleasure of watching, thanks to Austin, Gurren Lagann the movie: Childhood’s End. I’m fairly sure every person in the world has seen the series by now. If you haven’t, you should go and watch it right now. It is the launching point from which all mecha-anime and fighting robot related fiction will have to compare to from now on. Anyway, the movie is a recap of the series following the trials and tribulations of Simon, Kamina, and eventually the Dai-Gurren crew all the way up to the mid-point of the series. What’s important is that towards the end of the film, Gainax has a lovingly crafted new interpretation of a very pivotal point in the storyline, it is a turning point for the main character and it is BEAUTIFUL. Destruction has never looked so gorgeous, it is animation so striking I nearly went blind. It comes highly recommended.
