Ambient shots aren’t something you want to overuse because if you go too fa,r it really kills the pace. It’s something that a lot of manga is notorious for. Sometimes it really works, Onepiece for example, and for a more western sample you might want to check out Hellboy. Mike Mignola has a way of setting up a mood with a single interspersed shot that has nothing to do with the plot except to establish a mood and atmosphere. Sometimes its symbolic, other times its merely there to darken the lights, whatever the case is, Mignola makes it work.
