Mr. Fahrenheit Page 24

Austin’s Notes: Ah, and here we are at the end of the road! Goodbye, Mr. Fahrenheit; who knows when we shall see you again? Goodbye, Trucker Witch: you might have been denied a place in the Rajas’ rogue gallery, but you’ll always have a place in my heart! Good bye Reginald’s love of Rugby, goodbye corner-sitting Ghurnst! Goodbye, I say, to the whole wonderful lot of you throw away side characters and discarded traits that we may never see again! All in all, I kind of enjoyed this little trip down memory lane: if I ever had any doubts about my improving (in terms of paneling, pacing, dialogue and simply how to tell an interesting story), well, this puts those doubts to rest. Not that I can write with the best of them, or anything, yet, but at least I’m not stuck back where I was three years ago, right? Even more personally, it gave me a chance to recall what I was doing, what kind of person I was and who my friends were 3 and a half years ago, back when writing the synopsis and then the scripts for this seemed the most daring, audacious and possibly dangerous thing I could be doing (imagine, putting my words and work out there for another human being to interpret).

Whether or not it’s all improved or turned out for the best, it’s nice to know I’ve not been static and that the work, while by no means perfect, is not the embarrassment I so feared it would be.  Thanks for reading, guys, but don’t take a breather just yet! Album 3 is on the way and is it a good’un! All your burning questions about Two-Legged Pete, Gauthier, the Rajas, Alex and Mason are about to be answered (and you’ll get some nice action pieces in there, too!)!

Austin’s Notes: I’ve no idea why Reginald’s referring to Mr. Fahrenheit as though he never met him. He saw what the guy was capable of; he took the brunt of that scream! Oh, but these were in the days before I learned just how important revision was. I’ve gotta thank my insane, nearly-fictitious playwriting professor, “Dr Jeffery Kallenberg” (nobody knows what his real name is, or if he’s even REAL! Check out picketfencepress.com for a window into his mad, mad world), for hammering the fear of GOD into me about revision if for nothing else. Incoherent and confounding as he was, his advice on that front was nothing if not sound.

I was very keen on the idea of “manly tears” at the time; I was almost fervent in my desire to end this B-Side with Mr. Fahrenheit driving into the sunset, tears STREAMING down his face, incapable of understanding why anyone would just run away from him like that! The guy’s a big ole’ softy, if you couldn’t tell (a psychotic big ole’ softy).

I like panel four, flaws and all, if only because it’s got a sort of “Ren and Stimpy” feel to it all. Reginald’s leg movement in particular brings this association to mind.

Slipping into the self-critical for a second, but god, I used to be the worst dialogue writer ever, didn’t I?

Austin’s Notes: The joke from Page 5 finds its conclusion! And it turns out that Mr. Fahrenheit’s packing some serious Mojo on his key. I don’t know how we’re going to handle this in the future, all this business about the keys granting multiple powers: seems to me that Matt and I are going to stick with the model of one person, one power. The keys just serve to unlock those individual powers: hence why Solly, when packing Sterber’s key, could open doors (despite Sterber’s ability being something COMPLETELY different. What? Well, wait around; you’ll see). What Mr. Fahrenheit’s will be in the end, who can say?

For those in the Portland, Oregon area: just an FYI, Garage Raja: Going Underground is now available at Floating World Comics.

Austin’s Notes: It was at this point that Mr. Rainwater actually stopped the storyboarding and writing and asked me to finish up for him. Yup; everything until Page 20 is Mr. Rainwater’s interpretation of my bare-bone synopses. Everything afterwards is from a script I wrote. Matt had only gotten so far as Page 19 and had no clue how to end it, so when he came home that summer he turned to me for my dubious expertise and, well, the rest is history. Honestly? These are the first scripts I wrote that actually survived almost completely intact. You can start to see Mr. Rainwater and I meshing as a team, right before your eyes!
